A steep backyard and wood decking provide challenges to a thriving garden. Our solution in the backyard was to grow upward. Retaining walls and trellises let us accomplish that goal, creating a terraced effect. A slab floor helps alleviate dampness underfoot. For the front deck, we built redwood flower boxes and filled them with popping colors to contrast with the deck’s gray hue.
